I remember a friend asked why saikosaponin a was taken as the index component of Bupleurum preparation before? Here are some answers according to my own experience; Not necessarily correct; For reference only:

Bupleurum chinense is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine. It has the functions of soothing the liver, relieving depression, and promoting qi.

Bupleurum chinense contains volatile oil, saponins, coumarins and other chemical components. Saponins have been used to treat chronic viral hepatitis. It is reported that more than 50 triterpenoid saponins have been isolated from Bupleurum.

 However, there is no report on the study of saponins in bupl eurueem scorzonerifolium Willd collected in the 1985 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia. In order to provide a scientific basis for clinical medication, the saponins were studied in this paper.   

Firstly, the total saponins were extracted by macroporous adsorption resin, and then five triterpenoid saponins were separated by chromatography. According to the physical and chemical properties and spectral analysis results, they were identified as saikosaponin a, saikosaponin C, saikosaponin d, 6 ″ - o-acetylsaikosaponin A and 6 ″ - o-acetylsaikosaponin D, which were obtained from this plant for the first time.
