Proanthocyanidins are one of the main components of grape tea polyphenol capsules and a powerful antioxidant. However, many people will confuse proanthocyanidins with anthocyanins. In fact, anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins are not the same substance, and there are many differences between them.

Differences between anthocyanins and procyanidins:

First of all, from the chemical structure, anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins are two completely different substances. Proanthocyanidins belong to polyphenols and anthocyanins belong to flavonoids. Procyanidins are also called procyanidins. They can be produced by heating in acidic medium. Therefore, these polyphenols are named procyanidins.

Secondly, the two substances also have differences in color: anthocyanin is a water-soluble pigment, which is one of the main pigments constituting the color of petals and fruits. It can change color with the acid and alkali of cell fluid. When the cell fluid is acidic, it tends to be red, and when the cell fluid is alkaline, it tends to be blue. Procyanidins are colorless and are formed by combining different amounts of catechins or epicatechins.

In addition, anthocyanins and procyanidins exist in different regions. Proanthocyanidins are widely found in plant skins, shells and seeds, such as grape seeds, apple skins, peanut skins and cranberries; Anthocyanins are widely found in blueberries, cherries, strawberries, grapes, blackcurrants and mountain mulberry. Among them, purple cyanidin, orange geranium and blue purple Delphinium are common in nature.

Relationship between anthocyanins and procyanidins:

Anthocyanins and procyanidins are both flavonoids. Both of them are based on three aromatic ring structures. Both of them are powerful antioxidants.
